A few weeks ago, Wild Lee – CEO of Venture Electronics announced the release of the new and improved MONK PLUS earbud earphones. There are a few key changes in the physical appearance compared to the original MONK (reviewed here) which are shown in the photos below. Most notable change is the 64 Ohm impedance which may exhibit subtle differences in sound and performance depending on the source used. In my experience, the MONK Plus responds well to headphone amplifiers such as the OPPO HA-2, whereas the original MONK didn’t really need the extra power to optimise its performance. The MONK Plus still shares the same sound signature as the original MONK however, the treble is just a tad more refined or smooth. Overall, this is a step in the right direction in terms of sound quality.

The earbuds are now translucent with a smoked tint which is nice for a change. Some may still prefer the solid black look, but for my personal preference I like the new presentation better. At least it’s a departure from looking too “ordinary”.

The VE Logo and Model – “MONK” are now clearly printed on the earbuds. A clear sign that Venture Electronics is moving up in the world.

The Y-split is also heaps better than the original. There is a visible logo which is a welcome addition.

The MONK Plus now has an adjustable neck cinch, excellent to keep the earphone cable stable and secure while on the move.

The strain-relief at the termination is now shorter than the original MONK. I really like this change because it doesn’t stick out as much and makes it safer when handling the earphones while plugged-in to a digital audio player.

The MONK Plus also comes with red and blue foam covers which can be used to indicate the left and right sides. Simple but effective solution!

I’d like to congratulate Wild Lee and the rest of Venture Electronics for their consistency in improving their products. Another job well done!

The VE Monk Plus can be purchased online: Venture Electronics (AliExpress)

How does this sound? Or is it in another review?

    • d marc0 April 20, 2016   Reply →

It’s very similar to the original MONK which I’ve already reviewed. Subtle improvements in treble refinement and smoothness.

I’ve heard others report that they found the Monk+ a little more detailed than the Monk, while being less airy and/or having a reduced soundstage. What were your impressions in these areas?

    • d marc0 April 20, 2016   Reply →

Less treble energy, more refined and smoother presentation. Soundstage, maybe a bit reduced but not much. I prefer the Monk Plus, it sounds more mature.

Would like to see budget fi DAPs and HPs

  • KWW April 20, 2016   Reply →

The VE Monk is a budget champion that punches way above its weight, and expectations are high for the new VE Monk Plus as well! Hoping for the opportunity to get my hands on a pair of these to pair with

That said, in addition to earphones, it would be great to see VE come up with budget/high-fi Digital Audio Players that are at least convenient to carry, and (mostly vain wishful thinking) easy to swap batteries for. I might be asking for too much though given how fantastic the Monk (and Monk Plus) is.
